With regard to the appointment of High Court Judges, the Parliamentary Committee approved the appointment of Judge Ayesha Malik of the Lahore High Court as a High Court Judge.

A meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on the Nomination of Judges was held under the chairmanship of Senator Farooq Naik of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), where the nomination of Judge Ayesha Malik as a Supreme Court Justice was approved.

Farooq Naik said that Ayesha Malik's name was approved by consensus and recommended by the Judicial Commission.

He said that we are not going to abolish the seniority procedure, but this is the first appointment of a woman and it was approved.

Farooq Naik said that approving the name of Judge Ayesha Malik was in the national interest.

Following approval by the parliamentary panel, the way was paved for Judge Ayesha Malik to become the first female judge on the country's highest court.

Previously, the name of Judge Ayesha Malik was not approved during the meeting of the Judicial Commission held in September 2021.

During the meeting of the Judicial Commission, four members of the commission opposed the appointment of Judge Ayesha Malik, who is fourth in the seniority list of the Lahore High Court.

The nomination of Justice Ayesha Malik to the Supreme Court was supported by 4 members.

Abdul Latif Afridi, then president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, had called for nationwide protests, with the legal community calling the case an abuse in the appointment of senior Supreme Court judges.

Referring to the Jan. 6 meeting of the Judicial Commission, Federal Law Minister Forough Naseem told reporters that the Judicial Commission had made a historic decision and that, for the first time in Pakistan's history, a wife had been appointed. Supreme Court judge. .

He said that 5 members voted in favor and 4 members against.

He said Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Judge Umar Ata Bandial, Judge (retired) Sarmad Jalal Usmani, the Minister of Justice and the Attorney General supported him.
